Gregory Eltringham is a painting professor, writer, musician, and visual artist. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo, two-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. He is a member of Friendship Magic Collective, an ongoing project with artist Honor Bowman Hall, engaged in a range of activities including studio production, writing, and musical performance, all organized around the following concept: Enjoyment is Part of the Program.
Over the past two decades, the figure has served as a vehicle of continuous investigation in Eltringham's studio practice, and the work has always been closely tied to personal experiences and reaction to outside forces. His current production is organized around a variety of motifs addressing specific conceptual concerns including issues of gender, privilege, identity, and politics. The work comments and reflects on social dynamics, questionable behavior, habitation, and the limits of personal comfort. The overall practice continues to engage with the legacy and relevance of painting, positioned in relation to historical models with awareness of the current time and circumstances. Eltringham continues to question the current dialog regarding painting not being able to express the moment. He states, "I understand the argument, but I don't buy it."
